BEFORE YOU APPLY COMING TO CANADA

If you apply from US, the average time it takes for you to get approved is now 16-22 months. But again, that timeframe may increase when you face one of these situations:

  • Application returned due to incomplete or insufficient information
  • Face Interview

After you apply, there is nothing you can do to expedite your case other than to wait until you hear back from them. Even though they set a certain timeframe when you should hear back from them after you submit your application, it is not always true that you may fall into that timeframe. According to my own personal experience, here is how the process flows;

Acknowledgement letter

After you apply, you will get an acknowledgement letter which advises you that your application has been received by Canadian immigration department notifying you with your account number. Please remember that you account no acts as reference no. for your file and whenever you have any question regarding your application, it is important that you give them your account no which is also called file no. You will get your file no. approximately within 30-50 days after you submit your application. Regardless of whether you submit an complete or incomplete application, you will be issued the file no.

Once the file no. has been assigned to you, the real process begins. You can check the status of your case through the file no. by going to this site

Assessment

Before they qualify you as a skilled applicant, they may ask you to provide any information regarding all applicants included in your application. It is called assessment process. And, even after assessment process, you should be aware that they may ask for any relevant information from time to time. It is your duty to provide these information within specified period of time. Again, it may take up to a  year before you will be notified that your assessment is done and the file is in process. After you get your assessment letter, you should assume that you meet their initial criteria based on the point system. I suggest you to update your address whenever you move. It can be done by simply faxing them the form where you can indicate your new address. Please go to this site for detail info.

If you Face interview

After the assessment, the first letter will tell you that you are required to appear for an interview and the second letter will tell you where and when do you need to appear for an interview. There may be significant time gap between these two letters (1-3 months). Other than being in the borderline of minimum point requirement, I have seen only a small percentage of candidates have had to face an interview while most of the candidates have their interview waived. But, do not get afraid even if you have to face an interview because I have not heard of anybody get their case rejected after interview. The only thing is that you have to prepare for some extra documents which you have to present during an interview. If you face an interview, the types of document  you may have to present in front of the counselor varies and it all depends on individual case. But, I recommend you to consult with another candidate who may have gone through similar procedure before and make sure that you take ample time to prepare for these documents. Please do not miss any of the documents which you may be required to present during the interview process. It last about 45 to 60 minutes and prepare yourself for any possible question they may ask. Do not say anything which is not relevant to the subject matter. Do not put yourself in the circumstance that they may have to ask you second question with the same topic. Short answer is best.

Possible interview documents may include;

1 - Passport - Original valid passports required for yourself and all dependents

2 - Birth Certificates for yourself and all dependents

3 - Marriage certificate

4 - Education degrees, diplomas and transcripts for yourself

5 - Complete school transcripts for your accompanying children

6 - Original letters of employment verification and reference on official company letterhead detailing your current and previous work experience. Letters of reference must be signed by a responsible officer or supervisor.

7 - Current immigration status

8 - Current statement of fund

Medical

When they ask you for medical document for all applicants, you should assume that you are in the final phase of the whole process. It costs $400.00 approximately for each applicant to undergo medical procedure. Unless you have chronic disease which may be of big financial burden for Canadian government or any type of serious medical condition like previous heart surgery or kidney transplant, it is highly unlikely that you may not be approved. If you face an interview, you should submit your medical before you appear for an interview.

Letter of approval

This is the final letter you may receive from them informing you that you have been approved for skilled level immigrant visa. It is your duty to pay landing fee as soon as possible before you enter Canada. I would recommend you to pay landing fee after you are done with your medical. Within 1-2 months, you will get the letter of approval and they will ask you to mail all applicant's passports. FEDEX is the best option. Normally, it takes about 2 weeks to get your passports back from the time you send. Now, you are ready to move into the north side of the border.
